Keyboard Typing Speed (WPM) Calculator & Test

Instantly test how many words per minute you type on a keyboard. Measure your 10-finger typing speed, accuracy rate, and performance for free.

This tool is for general informational purposes. Results may differ from professional typing speed test results.

How Is Keyboard Typing Speed Measured?

What Is WPM (Words Per Minute)?

WPM measures the number of words typed in a given time divided by minutes. A standard 'word' is assumed to be 5 characters; therefore WPM can be calculated based on actual word count or character count.

WPM Formula

WPM = Kelime Sayısı ÷ Süre (dakika)

Example: 250 words in 5 minutes → 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM

Accuracy Rate and the Effect of Errors

Gross WPM measures raw speed; Net WPM deducts errors to reflect true performance. Net WPM = Gross WPM − Error Count. Below 95% accuracy is considered failing in professional evaluations.

Gross WPM

Word Count ÷ Time. No error penalty. Shows raw speed.

Net WPM

Gross WPM − Error Count. Reflects true performance.

Accuracy (%)

(Correct Keys ÷ Total Keys) × 100. Aim for 98–99%.

What Should an Average Person's Typing Speed Be?

Beginners, Standard Users, and Professionals

Differences Between WPM and CPM (Characters Per Minute)

WPM

  • Word-based measurement
  • 1 word = avg. 5 characters
  • Standard for prose text
  • CPM ÷ 5 ≈ WPM

CPM

  • Character-based measurement
  • All keystrokes including spaces
  • Preferred for code & data entry
  • WPM × 5 ≈ CPM

Fast Typing Tactics (10-Finger Touch Typing)

Touch Typing Technique (Without Looking)

Touch typing is the technique of typing with 10 fingers without looking at the keyboard. Research shows that people who learn this technique double their WPM within 2–3 months.

1

Home Row Position

Left hand: A S D F · Right hand: J K L ;. Thumbs rest on the spacebar.

2

Each Finger Has a Zone

Each finger is responsible for specific keys. Right index covers H J N M; left index covers F G B V.

3

15 min Daily Practice

Start with Keybr or Typing.com. Focus on accuracy, not speed — speed comes with time.

Correct Posture and Finger Positioning

🪑

Sitting Position

⌨️

Keyboard Height

Wrists should be level with or slightly below the keyboard.

👁️
